Crafts with pipe cleaners – simple craft idea for children
I love uncomplicated handicraft ideas that you can just pull out of the drawer on a rainy day and the caterpillars made of pipe cleaners are such a project. You actually only need two “ingredients” that are a great basic craft material and you are therefore at home with luck anyway:
Colorful pipe cleaner – These can now also be bought in large Maxipacks*. You can also use them for many other craft projects. For example, very small children can wrap bracelets with large pearls from pipe cleaners.
Wobble eyes to stick on – I always have in different sizes* because I also love them for gift packaging, invitations and Co. For this project, small wobbly eyes with 6mm diameter (or smaller) are sufficient.
In addition, you still need a pen or rod to wrap. Important tip for relaxed tinkering: Here you should make sure that the surface is as smooth as possible. Wooden spoons made of wood or colored pencils with soft grip coating are less suitable because the caterpillars are later difficult to withdraw, especially for children. Many pens for children have small knobs or an anti-slip coating that helps to learn to write. But this also ensures that the caterpillars do not slip! A smooth pen works best.

For you, the instructions follow in the practical overview. Incidentally, you can also find a lot more craft ideas for children in the article on the subject of creative handicrafts for children’s birthday. Crafting caterpillars with pipe cleaners
Simple and fast handicraft project for children on autumn afternoons: you need little material for the caterpillars from pipe cleaners.
Crowd: 1 caterpillar
Instructions
-
First look for four colors pipe cleaner: three for the caterpillar, one for the sensors. On request, you can of course also design the caterpillar longer!
-
Turn the ends of the three pipe cleaners together for the caterpillar in the desired order, so that a long ribbon is created.
-
Wrap the pipe cleaner closely for a smooth (!) Pen.
-
Pull the finished caterpillar body from the pen and work out any protruding parts and the end a little.
-
Now collapse the pipe cleaner for the sensors in the middle and twisted about 2/3 of the connected end.
-
Forms slightly rotated sensors from the two open ends.
-
Put the sensors into the caterpillar and then bend the caterpillar into the desired shape.
-
Now only the wobbly eyes are missing. If these are not liable enough, you can optionally use a hot glue gun. An adult should help here depending on the age of the children!
Notes
Working hours depends on the age of the children. Make sure to use a smooth pen so that the children can simply pull off the caterpillars. Cold spoons or pens with soft grip or the like don’t work well!
Have fun tinkering
