In this article I will show you how you can make cold porcelain yourself with just 3 ingredients.

What is cold porcelain?

Cold porcelain, also known as air-drying modeling clay, fake porcelain or kneaded porcelain, hardens without a complex starch-based firing process. In contrast to traditional porcelain, which requires high temperatures in the oven, cold porcelain can simply air dry and develop a firm, yet light consistency. It’s really easy to knead and work with, which is why it’s also a great activity to do with children.

It’s so easy to make cold porcelain yourself:

Ribbon
Colored markers
Scissors
pike
rolling pin
cling film

Instructions

Water, baking soda and cornstarch are put in a pot.

The mixture is slowly heated with continuous stirring.

The mixture begins to bubble and gradually thickens. Once it has reached a firm consistency, remove the pot from the heat.

Wrap the dough in cling film and let it cool for about 30 minutes. This is particularly quick in the freezer.

After the dough has cooled, it is rolled out like cookie dough and shaped into different shapes using cookie cutters.

A hole is pierced into each shape with a skewer so that a ribbon can be threaded later.

The shaped pieces now have to dry for two days.

Once dry, the shapes can be painted with colored markers as desired.

Finally, thread a ribbon through the previously punched holes. The cold porcelain pendants are now finished!

Cold porcelain or salt dough?

Cold porcelain and salt dough are both materials for craft projects with children, but they differ in composition, hardening and appearance. Cold porcelain consists of starch, baking soda and water, dries out in the air and looks very white and smooth on the outside when it is dry. Salt dough, made from flour, salt and water, must be baked and left for several days beforehand. The result is also slightly yellower and grittier.
