We are getting closer and closer to Advent in the DIY Night Advent countdown – there are still ten days until the first Advent! Every day in November, a creative door opens on our countdown calendar DIY nights with a great prize.
I’m opening my door today with my partner Brother – I have a great one for you DIY gift idea with instructions and a competition at the end of the post: I’ll show you in my door today how you can easily make a Christmas atmosphere explosion box yourself.
Brother once again used the smart labeling device P-touch CUBE Plus – this allows you to individually label tapes and labels using an app. Perfect for customizing the Explosion Box.
As always, you can win something great at the end of the post – today you can P-touch CUBE Plus to win.
But first I will introduce you to the great device and explain the creative project step by step.
What is an Explosion Box?
One Explosion Box is a creative gift packaging that opens when you open the lid. There are little surprises and sweet touches hidden inside. You can insert tabs, glue things in and get really creative.
My Explosion Box has the motto “Christmas spirit” and is a great gift idea to quickly get the recipient into the Christmas spirit.
This is what I have hidden in my Explosion Box:
- a mini Christmas or disco ball
- a candy cane
- Sheet music for a Christmas song
- a tea light
- a tea bag with Christmas tea
If that doesn’t get you in the Christmas spirit, I don’t know what will!
THIS IS THE DIY NIGHT ADVENT COUNTDOWN:
DIYnachten is the creative Advent countdown by Gingered Things, Mrs. Greenhouse, Dekotopia and me. Behind the individual doors you will not only find a DIY idea for crafting, but also super cool prizes that will make the hobbyist’s heart beat faster.
Together with you in November we will count the days until Advent and open a new countdown door every day on one of our blogs. Behind every countdown door there is one DIY idea and a brilliant win for you! You can easily click on the door of the day via the website.
About Brother & the P-touch Cube Plus
The P-touch CUBE Plus is a smart labeling device – you can connect it to your smartphone via a Bluetooth interface. This includes an app in which you can then enter the lettering that you would like to print. You can have the font printed on textile ribbons, iron-on tapes or self-adhesive labels.
This is how it works:
1. Equip yourself with a tape cassette of your choice (textile tape, labels or iron-on tape). The tape cassettes are available in many different colors.
2. The tape cassette is inserted into the P-touch CUBE Plus. Then open the associated app (“Design & Print 2”) on your smartphone and enter your text. Here you can choose between different fonts and adjust the font size. Optionally, you can also add icons and frames. There are a lot of symbols – I chose different Christmas symbols for my project.
You can then enter whether the tape should be printed once or multiple times. It is also possible to have the tapes cut automatically by the P-touch CUBE Plus.
3. Then click on “Print” and your individual label tape will be printed!
The P-touch CUBE Plus can print tapes and labels with a width of up to 24mm.
On this Brother page you can find more information about the P-touch CUBE Plus and the matching label tapes.
Here’s how to do it: Make a Christmas Spirit Explosion Box
Little surprises for the explosion box
- a mini Christmas or disco ball
- a candy cane
- Sheet music for a Christmas song
- a tea light
- a tea bag with Christmas tea

Step 1: Draw the grid for the explosion box
You need a sturdy piece of paper for the explosion box 30 x 30 cm. (Attention: The paper I linked is 30.5 cm wide, so still needs to be cut.)
Draw at a distance of 10 cm Insert two horizontal and two vertical pencil lines so that the paper is divided into nine equal areas.
Next, connect the lines at the corners as you see in the instruction pictures.
Tip: If you click on the images you can enlarge them.
Step 2: Cut the explosion box
Now use the scissors to cut off the four corners of the paper at an angle.
Use scissors or a cutter to score the pencil lines so you can fold them more easily. Then fold the paper forward along the four lines.
Step 3: Cut the tabs
Since the explosion box should have two pockets, cut the paper as you see in the picture.
Then glue the two triangles together in the middle to create a pocket.
Step 4: Print matching labels for the surprises
Now use the P-touch CUBE Plus to print out a label for each little surprise. You can find some sweet inspiration in the photo:
Step 5: Glue and tuck in surprises
Now put the tea bag and the music sheet into the small pockets.
For the Christmas ball and the candy cane, use the labels directly to stick them in the explosion box.
The tea light is glued to the middle of the box with hot glue.
If you want, you can now grab colorful markers and paint the box.
Step 5: Design the lid
The box itself is now finished. But we still need a lid.
To do this, grab a piece of white paper and draw a 10.3 x 10.3 cm square in the middle. The lines may overlap slightly.
Outwards you then sketch a wave pattern in each direction – this will later look like snow running down.
Make sure you mark a small tab on each side of the lid.
Then cut out the lid and put it together using the small tabs and craft glue.
… and the sweet homemade gift idea for Christmas and Advent is ready!
Now fold the four sides of the box towards the middle and close the box with the lid.
The only special highlight that is now missing is an individual label that you can print out with the P-touch CUBE Plus. Print a suitable message on it such as “Merry Christmas” and the name of the person who should receive the explosion box.
It’s so much fun to add a special touch to my creative projects with the P-touch CUBE Plus. And so that you can also enjoy it, we have another great competition for you.
