We’re getting closer and closer to Advent in the DIY Night Advent countdown – six more days until the first Advent! Every day in November, a creative door opens on our countdown calendar DIY nights with a great prize.
I’m opening my door today with my partner Novus Dahle – I have a great one for you DIY Deco-Idee, For which you don’t need much more than paper squares and a decorative ring: I’ll show you how to make a decorative ring with paper stars out of paper squares.
The DAHLE 533 lever cutter helps me with this – I can cut up to 15 sheets of paper at the same time, it’s so practical!
As always, you can win something great at the end of the article – today you can win a brilliant set from Novus Dahle for everything to do with cutting (lever cutter, cutting mat, ruler, scissors).
But first I’ll show you the creative project step by step.
THIS IS THE DIY NIGHT ADVENT COUNTDOWN:
DIYnachten is the creative Advent countdown by Gingered Things, Mrs. Greenhouse, Dekotopia and me. Behind the individual doors you will not only find a DIY idea for crafting, but also super cool prizes that will make the hobbyist’s heart beat faster.
Together with you in November we will count the days until Advent and open a new countdown door every day on one of our blogs. Behind every countdown door there is one DIY idea and a brilliant win for you! You can easily click on the door of the day via the website.
The great thing about the DIY star wreath: You don’t need a template for the stars at all – you can simply make them out of paper squares. Once you get the folding technique down, it goes really quickly.
I simply used leftover wrapping paper for my 3D stars. This gives the leftover paper another great use – and I think the mix of star patterns is really nice.
This is how it works: Make a 3D star wreath out of paper
First, cut squares of paper in different sizes. I made the largest star with an 8 x 8 cm square and then varied the sizes downwards as desired.
A lever cutter will help you a lot when cutting the squares – because you can use it to cut wonderfully accurate squares from leftover paper, and even several sheets at once. To achieve this, Dahle has made the format lines on the cutting table on the new lever cutters more extensive and intuitive – and with the help of the back stop, the paper can be cut with millimeter precision based on the format lines.
I don’t want to be without my lever cutter for paper crafts anymore! It just happens so much faster.
This is how you fold the 3D stars:
First, fold the square in the middle – edge to edge.
The next step is to create a mark for folding.
Fold the bottom right corner up once and make a small mark in the middle with your fingernail.
Repeat the same thing with the top right corner.
This creates a small cross as a marker.
Now fold the lower left corner into the cross and smooth out the folded edge.
Then fold the middle edge to the left and smooth out the folded edge here too.
Now fold the bottom right corner towards the middle so that the two edges meet in the middle.
Smooth out the folded edge again.
Now fold both sides back so that they meet in the middle.
Now cut the open (!) side to a point. The sharper you cut the angle, the sharper the points of the star will be.
Done! Now unfold the star again and correct the folded edges so that the long edges are pressed outwards and the short edges inwards.
Your 3D star is ready!
Folding seems very complicated at first, I know – but give it a try because once you get the hang of it, it’s really quick. I folded many more stars in no time.
Next, glue the stars to the decorative ring with hot glue.
It looks particularly beautiful when the stars are larger in the middle and become smaller towards the outside. Feel free to let the stars overlap, it looks particularly pretty.
