In our attic apartment in Leipzig we only had a very small balcony – so a vertical garden was needed! The small Ikea Vesken roller wagon is space-saving and can be moved quickly & quickly thanks to roles. Due to the holes in the floors and the material (plastic), it is ideally suited to make a vertical garden out of it, which is also mobile – perfect for small balconies in the city!

Step 1

In the first step you cut individual strips of separation fleece and place them in the fans of the trolley. This prevents earth from trickling through the holes in the ground, but the moisture can still get through.

Then you can use the plants on the floors of your vertical garden and fill up the gaps with soil.

Step 3

For the labeling of the individual floors, I sawed a wooden strip into the same size and labeled with a fire paint. For better protection against the weather, the wooden signs can still be painted with clear varnish.

Then attach a small strip of outdoor assembly on the back to attach the signs to the trolley.

Tip: This vertical garden works best with flat -rooted plants such as Sempervive or small young plants/seedlings. As soon as the young plants grow up, you should repott them so that they have more space for their roots.
When planting, I decided to create 3 thematic gardens: a rock garden on the top floor with Sempervive, a herbal garden with herbal seedlings in the middle and a bee garden with bee-friendly bloom plants on the bottom floor.
