Two weeks ago I showed you the super simple unicorn cupcakes for children’s birthday parties and today there are instructions on how to bake a delicious unicorn cake for your own birthday step by step. I just used one of my favorite cake recipes: chocolaty, berry and juicy.

Chocolate unicorn cake with berry filling and cream cheese

Recipes for children’s birthday parties that you find online are often too sweet for me or don’t taste one hundred percent for other reasons – that’s why I always try to convert one of our proven recipes. For the unicorn cake I modified the chocolate dream cake a bit. You can actually find the recipe here on the blog for almost 10 years. The cake is deliciously moist and the bases also work perfectly for wedding cakes and the like. So I simply adjusted the quantities a bit and started baking for the unicorn cake.

How to bake a unicorn cake with filling step by step

Step 1 Bake chocolate bases

For the bases you just have to mix all the ingredients and then bake the dough in a baking pan covered with baking paper in a preheated oven at 180 degrees top and bottom heat for about 50 minutes. Then let the cake cool completely.

Step 2 Cut out the triangle and cut the curve for the unicorn’s mouth

Then cut a generous pie slice out of the cake. Then round the side to the left of it to create the unicorn’s mouth. Keep the leftovers safe! I have added a collage with step-by-step photos for you so that you can easily understand the individual steps.

Step 3 Halve and cover the bottom

In the next step I halved the cake base, put the top aside and filled the cake with the cream cheese and the berries. For the cream cheese you just have to melt the chocolate and then mix it well with all the other ingredients.

Step 4 Put the lid on and spread the cake

Then I put on the second base and spread the cake very thinly with cream cheese to catch all the crumbs.

Step 5 Shape and glue unicorn ear

From the curve that I cut off in step 2, I cut an ear and glued it to the unicorn with some cream.

Step 6 Cover and decorate the unicorn cake with couverture

Then I covered and decorated the entire cake with couverture as long as the couverture wasn’t quite set. To do this, I first formed an eye from small sprinkles and then formed the unicorn mane with the chocolate beans.

Step 7 Make a unicorn out of an ice cream cone

Of course, the most important thing about the unicorn should not be missing: the horn! For this I dipped the edge of an ice cream cone in chocolate and then sprinkled it with colorful sprinkles. After everything got solid, I attached the horn to the unicorn!
